Amanda, 19, recently came to our center with her boyfriend, Dan. She was quiet and pensive while he sat with his arms crossed, looking at the floor. She had been to see us the year prior. At that time she was found to be pregnant with his child. She delivered a healthy baby boy and they’ve been together ever since. This time her pregnancy test was negative. They looked relieved. They spoke of marriage. We encouraged them not to wait, while counseling abstinence with them.
When we asked them about their faith, I watched Dan close up again. Amanda, on the other hand, was open - more than that, she was hungry. She asked many questions as we presented the gospel. Dan’s eyes indicated he was listening and I watched him begin to soften. He asked more questions. They couldn’t understand how God could really accept them when He knew all their sins. I told them about Christ’s robes of righteousness covering us, so when God looks at us, He sees only Jesus’ purity, not our sins. And while that takes care of the outside, the Holy Spirit is working on the inside to change our desires and very nature, making us more like Christ every day. And “He who began a good work in us, is faithful to complete it...” Dan’s arms loosened. He took Amanda’s hand and they prayed to accept Jesus.
Such light feet walked from our center that day and those of us who were privileged to be part of God’s great work fell asleep that night with praise on our lips.
