A Day in the Life

(This comes from our downtown director, Kira Wesley.)

Despite what you read in these monthly letters to our supporters, working in a pregnancy care center isn’t always inspirational.  In fact, some days can be downright difficult.  On those days I find peace in prayer, in the Word and sometimes in sharing my frustrations with fellow employees.  But then a client will come by or someone will call and disturb the peace all over again.  It was on such a day that, right around closing, the phone rang.

“Hello, this is Kira. How may I help you?”

“Uh, hi, you might not remember me,” she began, stating her name.  She was right; I didn’t.

“I was there in May of last year,” she volunteered, “but I just wanted to tell you that when I went to your Center I was all set to have an abortion, but you talked to me and now I have a beautiful baby daughter.”

“Wow, that is so wonderful!” I said, feeling my spirits revive.

“Well, I just thought you should know that,” she added and then she hung up.

She might have said thank you, good bye or any number of other things after that, but I don’t remember much after she said she changed her mind because of something I did.  I had been an instrument of God’s love!  I realize now that change may not always be visible to us, but it can and does happen by sowing the seeds of love, compassion, and perseverance in difficult times.  Then again, every once in a while, often on difficult days, God will give us a glimpse of His harvest!
