About Human Life

The human race has made some incredible strides in understanding the intricacies of life. We now fully appreciate the role that the DNA molecule plays in providing the blueprint for constructing the majority of life on this planet. We have a strong working knowledge of how human eggs and sperm are produced and how they are, in and of themselves, incapable of producing life. But put them together and it’s a completely different ball game. The resulting fertilized egg is off to the races. All that is required for that first cell – carrying half the genetic code of its father and half of its mother – to develop into a complete and unique human being is nutrition. From a strictly scientific perspective, everything is in place at the moment of conception.

Knowing this – and no one can legitimately dispute it! – it is impossible to argue, though many try, that human life begins sometime after conception. The baby is not “just a ball of cells” or “a glob of tissue” in the first trimester. It is a human being needing little more care than a newborn. (Actually, anyone who has had a child could make a strong case for a newborn requiring considerably more care than a preborn one!) And since this is true, it becomes impossible for someone to make a moral distinction between killing a newborn baby and taking the life of a preborn baby through abortion. People will make any number of arguments to justify an abortion, but there is no arguing away the fact that an abortion is the premeditated destruction of a human life. And that is the definition of murder.

The more scientists learn about life, the more complex and awe-inspiring it becomes. About three years ago, through the collaborative efforts of scientists around the world, the entire human genetic code of over six billion base pairs was sequenced. This was a monumental accomplishment of science. Since then, researchers have been exploring the interaction of the proteins produced by the genetic code and discovering a level of complexity that they can barely comprehend. More and more, scientists are discarding classic theories of evolution (natural selection operating on chance mutations over long periods of time) for a more plausible “creationist” theory, namely that life exists by some master design, not by random processes.

It is a very short leap from a master planner to our God, who has graciously explained it all in His Operations Manual for Humans, or the Bible. God’s love for us is made clear throughout the Bible and His love extends into our prenatal lives -
